The Career Place is run by Margaret Graham and Jane Ambrose, two of the original founding members, and Scott Stewart who started working with us in 2021. We are assisted by a team of six associates to help deliver our guidance work.
The Career Place was formed in 2020 but most of the team bring extensive experience of career guidance work with young people, in a variety of settings including schools, colleges and universities.
Collectively we contribute a diverse range of past career experience to our career guidance work including accountancy, recruitment and human resources, journalism, hospitality, fine art and education.
Although our backgrounds are very different, as a team we are united in bringing a real passion to our work, aiming to provide the best possible up to date career guidance to young people in a relaxed, friendly and professional way.
The team are all fully qualified careers guidance professionals. We are all PVG checked and have undertaken safe guarding and mental health first aid. All of us are also committed to keeping up-to-date with CPD relevant to young people, and undertake to abide by the Career Development Institute’s code of Ethical Conduct.

I qualified as a Career Guidance professional in 2009. Since then I have provided careers guidance in both university and college settings, however the bulk of my career experience has been with young people in schools, whilst working with Inspiring Futures, an independent career company from 2011 until 2019, and then with The Career Place going forwards.
I can truly say that I love my job. Meeting with young people to help support them make important decisions, which can be daunting and stressful to them, is a real privilege.
After I graduated from University of St Andrews, with a degree in Management & Economics, I trained as a Chartered Accountant working in private practice, then worked in education as a lecturer with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.
I was delighted to join The Career Place shortly after graduating as a qualified Career Guidance Professional and have thoroughly enjoyed my work with all the young people I have met thus far.

It’s not every young person that knows the answer to the question: ‘What do you want to do when you leave school?’
Therefore, I enjoy guiding others to navigate their own path and supporting them to make informed decisions
about what to do next. Most importantly though, I enjoy helping others to understand what is right for them.
I obtained my Undergraduate degree in International Business from the University of Edinburgh and my own career path has led me to many different places; Edinburgh, Albuquerque, London,
Vancouver, Montreal and Switzerland. Helping others has always been at the heart of my professional life.
Previously, I worked in the Technology and Recruitment sectors, but most time was spent working with young
people from all over the world at a prestigious International Summer Camp in the resort of Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
Following my degree in History from the University of Edinburgh, I initially worked for the National Audit Office, before switching to career guidance, something I always had an interest in.

Following my degree in History from the University of Edinburgh, I initially worked for the National Audit Office, before switching to career guidance, something I always had an interest in.
Since I qualified as a career adviser in 1991, I have had the opportunity to work with both young people and adults, and over those 30 years, have built up a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the college/university sectors, job-hunting and CVs, non-traditional pathways and UK qualifications.
I joined Inspiring Futures in 2011, having previously worked for Careers Scotland/SDS and the SCQF
Partnership. As the Area Director for Scotland I had the opportunity to work with many wonderful schools and I am delighted that many of them continue to put their trust in The Career Place.
In many ways my long career within this sector, speaks for itself. I consider myself very fortunate to have found a vocation that I truly enjoy, and to be able to help others, be it their first step into employment, choosing the right university/college course, or advising career changers, is one that I relish!
If you are a fully qualified Careers Guidance professional with experience of working with young people, who is interested in becoming a self-employed associate with us, please send us your CV.
We are a friendly supportive team, offering flexible part-time work and a generous day rate.
